Hiding their support

When I ran for 50th Ward Alderman in 1983, several business owners contributed as much as they could to my campaign while staying below the amount that required public disclosure. One of them received city contracts and knew he would lose them if it was known that he had given money to a Machine opponent.

Another one gave my opponent the lowest amount necessary to be publicly reported. He gave me just a little bit less than that. He gave it to me in cash and had someone else hand it to me, so it couldn’t be traced to him.
