What should we do? Kill them?

City Council resolutions had no legal force. They were merely advisory, and many Aldermen used them to honor individuals in their wards for birthdays, anniversaries, or other personal achievements.

Sometimes, resolutions called upon another governmental entity to act on an issue. That was the case one day when 48th Ward Alderman Marion Volini voted in favor of a resolution calling upon the Illinois General Assembly to pass a gay rights bill.

When she returned to her office later that day, a fellow parishioner from St. Ita’s scolded her for her vote.

“Marion,” the caller forcefully stated, “Don’t you know it’s a sin?”

“What should we do,” Volini responded. “Kill them?”
