A back-handed compliment

50th Ward Alderman Bernard Stone was running for re-election in 1987. At a community meeting, he said that his opponent, Michael Moses, had never done anything in the neighborhood.

Then he said, “at least my last opponent had a record.”

I was his last opponent. But he hadn’t acknowledged my “record” when I ran against him.
