A bucket of water

21st Ward Alderman Niles Sherman was angry that his son had been laid off from his job in the city sewer department during the Washington administration.

He felt that act was unwarranted because he had carried the ward for Mayor Harold Washington in 1983 and believed that he should enjoy the “spoils” of victory.

Washington responded by saying, “I’m almost certain he (Sherman) could carry a bucket of water across the ward. He couldn’t carry much else.”
