Learning the candidate was Jewish
When Independent 50th ward campaign organizers learned that Lola Flamm, the 1974 Reform-backed Republican candidate for Cook County Clerk, told her son that she had visited the nursing home where Grandma Levy had lived, they were delighted to learn their candidate was Jewish.
They swiftly created a flyer calling for the election of “Lola Levy Flamm.” It was distributed in Jewish precincts and lured a huge crossover vote from normally Democratic Jewish voters.
