Outside her window
When I served on the staff of 48th Ward Alderman Marion Volini, a resident called the office one morning and asked why kids were walking back and forth in the park across the street of her building. I told her I didn’t know.
“Well, aren’t you going to find out?” she wanted to know.
No, I had no intention of trying to find out. But now, since she asked, I had to. So, I planned to drive over there at lunchtime and see what was going on.
It wasn’t necessary. She called right back and told me she saw the kids put up a banner between two trees. It said they were walking to raise money for their school.
It may have seemed to me like a trivial event, but to her it was very important. Something was going on where she lived and she wanted to make sure it wasn’t something bad.
