Byrne for Kennedy

Mayor Jane Byrne endorsed U.S. Senator Ted Kennedy for President in the 1980 Democratic primary election.

Her main reason (not publicly stated) was that Cook County State’s Attorney Rich Daley, her archenemy, was backing President Jimmy Carter for re-election.

Byrne used her office to pressure people to support Kennedy. It was her way of trying to keep them out of the Daley camp.
