Putting the Alderman in his place

In the mid-1980s, 49th Ward Ald. David Orr invited the North Town Community Council (NTCC) to participate in a north side arts committee.

50th Ward Ald. Bernard Stone, who served on the NTCC Board, angrily opposed the group even discussing participation because he said the committee met at the same time he held office hours. He claimed that was done intentionally by Orr (it wasn’t).

Despite Stone’s opposition, the NTCC Board discussed the invitation and voted to consider participation.

After talking about it, the group decided it was a worthy issue but not an organization priority. So, it didn’t participate.
